At Weigh2Health the focus is on the benefits of losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight.   We think this is a more positive and productive way to think, instead of focusing on the bad things associated with excess weight.  And while for some people looking better might be the most important reason to lose excess weight, the medical benefits of a healthy weight are great reasons to keep in mind too.   These can include:

  • Longer life
  • Increased energy
  • Improved sleep
  • Decreased risk for and/or improvement in many medical conditions:
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • High cholesterol
    • Coronary heart disease
    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
    • Liver disease
    • Gallbladder disease
    • Joint/arthritis pain in the legs and feet
    • Back pain
    • Cancers (e.g. breast, prostate, colon, cervix, uterus)
    • Sleep apnea
  • Less need for medications because of the above health improvements
  • Increased fertility
  • Healthier pregnancy and babies

All of these benefits also mean being able to participate in more things in life.  After achieving and maintaining a healthy weight many people find themselves taking up old favored hobbies and activities again and being more sociable – enjoying life more fully with family and friends.  In the end these types of benefits may be the most important and meaningful.
